More disruptions likely as Donegal continues to recover from Storm Amy

ELECTRICITY supply could be disrupted in the coming days as ESB crews carry out permanent repairs to infrastructure damaged by destructive winds last Friday.

These essential repairs follow a challenging weekend for the electricity supplier, which deployed crews and contractors from across the country to Donegal in the aftermath of Storm Amy to restore power to the county.

Donegal recorded some of the highest wind speeds during the status red weather warning and was one of the worst affected areas in terms of power outages.

At the peak of the storm, over 50,000 customers across the county were without power, with some homes and businesses waiting up to five days for their electricity to be restored.

By Tuesday, October 7, all customers affected by the storm had their power restored, a spokesperson for the ESB told the Donegal News.

“All available ESB networks resources, along with our partner contractors and crews from less impacted parts of the country, worked throughout the weekend and into this week in order to safely restore power to all customers,” the spokesperson added.

The electricity supplier apologised for the disruption to both family and commercial life. They also thanked customers across the county, especially those who were without power for several days, for their patience as crews worked to safely restore power.

Meanwhile, Cllr Tomas Sean Devine will raise two motions at Tuesday’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford MD. Both are in response to Storm Amy.

The 100% Redress Party councillor is calling for the council to prepare for future extreme weather events by opening community hubs when status orange weather alerts are in place.

He highlighted the short notice given when Friday’s storm was upgraded to a status red alert, which didn’t give people adequate time to prepare to leave their unfit homes or mobile homes.

Cllr Devine is also calling on the Council to assess the trees in housing estates to identify potentially dangerous ones at risk of falling in future storms.
