Molloy enjoying Ulster University experience

KJ Molloy is a Construction Engineering Management student from Ardara, Co. Donegal

1. Tell us about the highlight of your 1st year at Ulster University?
I played for the Ulster University Freshers Team and Monday night training sessions were a real highlight for me. The camaraderie between all the players was brilliant and it really helped me make new friends and settle in during my first few weeks at Ulster.
I was really surprised by how quickly I got to know people at Ulster University. Getting involved in different clubs and societies made it so easy to meet new friends and feel part of the community right away.

2. What is unique about UU?
What makes Ulster University unique is the close-knit and supportive learning environment it offers. With smaller class sizes, you really get the chance to know your lecturers on a personal level, which makes a huge difference. The lecturers are approachable and genuinely interested in helping you succeed, and it’s easy to reach out to them for guidance or extra support. This setup means you’re not just a number in a large lecture hall – your voice is heard, and your ideas matter. You feel like part of a community where you can connect with your peers and lecturers, making the learning experience much more engaging and rewarding.

3. Many Leaving Cert students from your home region may be considering UU as an option, what would you say to them?
I would definitely encourage anyone considering Ulster University to go for it. Studying in the North offers a fantastic experience, and it’s a great chance to step outside your comfort zone and try something new. The University has so much to offer, from excellent courses to a vibrant campus life, and it’s a brilliant opportunity to experience college in a different setting. If you’re on the fence, I’d say take the leap—you won’t regret it!

4. Tell us about your favourite aspects of your course?
My favourite aspect of studying Construction Engineering Management at Ulster has to be the great connection with the lecturers—they really know how to keep things engaging and make learning enjoyable. The lecturers are not just experts in their field, they’re also brilliant at getting everyone involved, making classes interactive and fun. Whether it’s through hands-on projects, group discussions, or just some good craic during lectures, they create a relaxed atmosphere that makes learning the subject so much more enjoyable and engaging.

5. Tell us about your favourite aspects of your campus location
My course is at the Belfast campus and one of my favourite aspects is its fantastic location – everything you need is right at your fingertips. Whether it’s the library, cafés, or study spaces, everything is close by, making it super convenient to balance student life.
