A small earthquake, measuring 0.9 in magnitude, was detected off the coast of Culdaff Bay in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Though too weak to be felt by residents, the tremor occurred at 1:18am on October 1st and was recorded by seismometers at St Columba’s College in Stranorlar.
This mini-quake took place at a shallow depth of 1km, and while not significant enough to cause any disturbance, it highlights the seismic activity that occurs in the region. Donegal is crisscrossed by two major fault lines, which occasionally result in tremors.
In fact, the county holds the record for Ireland’s largest onshore earthquake, a 2.5 magnitude event recorded on the Fanad Peninsula on January 26th, 2012.
