Minister for Education to visit Donegal today

By Dionne Meehan

MINISTER for Education, Norma Foley, is set to visit a number of locations throughout the county today.

First, the Minister will visit Scoil Íosagáin in Buncrana before attending the opening of Errigal College’s new modular building in Letterkenny.

The temporary modular building adds another seven new classrooms to Errigal College.

The extra space was urgently needed at the school due to its dramatic growth in recent times.

Following this, Minister Foley will visit St Eunan’s College before finishing her visit by canvassing with local councillors in Letterkenny.

Local Cllr Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly welcomed the Minister’s visit, particularly to St Eunan’s College.

Describing it as a “step in the right direction”, Cllr Kelly spoke of the “Trojan work” being carried out by the school’s student council to get the new extension “over the line”.

Cllr Kelly said one of his main priorities is to fast track this project as quickly as possible.

“I sat down with the Principal and the student council a number of weeks ago and went through it, there is an excess now of nearly 1,000 students attending that secondary school.

“The facilities are just not there to meet that demand.

“It is very important that this project does get the go-ahead in the not so distant future,” he said.

Hoping this extension will create better and more manageable facilities for all students, Cllr Kelly said the school needs to be able to cater for each and every student.

“At the minute, this is a very popular school.

“I attended the school myself, my brothers attended the school and my son will be attending the school in September.

“There are a lot of other families who would love their children to attend St. Eunan’s College but unfortunately, it is that high in demand, the school has to turn students away.

“That is something the school doesn’t want to be doing.

“On that, if this extension is delivered it will leave it that the school will be able to cater for more students and I suppose it will be a bit of respite for families as well,” he said.
