MILFORD United’s dream run in the FAI Junior Cup ended in nightmare fashion yesterday afternoon as they crashed out in the last 16 at the hands of reigning champions Pike Rovers at a jam-packed Moyle View Park.

The Limerick outfit lived up to their reputation as the best Junior side in the country with a wonderfully eye-catching display that had the home side chasing shadows for the entirety of the contest.

The visitors, who defeated Tipperary side St. Michael’s in last year’s decider, rubber-stamped their credentials as the favourites for this year’s crown with an emphatic performance that could, and probably should, have yielded a few more goals.

In the end, three goals in either half was more than enough to have the hosts begging for mercy at the end of a torturous ninety minutes.

Peter Doherty’s gallant troops had no complaints as they trudged towards the dressing room, having been completely outclassed by a side who would not be out of place playing at a much higher level.
