THE former Milford bakery premises has been put up for sale.
The buildings and adjoining land at Urbalshinny have been placed on the open market with an asking price of €175,000.
Built in 1936 by Jeremiah Shiels, the bakery was once one of the area’s principal employers. It closed some years ago however and there have been repeated calls for the buildings to be redeveloped.
Tasked with selling the former bakery is Joseph Reynolds of Property Partners Paul Reynolds & Co.
Mr Reynolds said that given its water’s edge location, the premises has major potential.
“Because it is in a very scenic location on Mulroy Bay there is obvious leisure potential, glamping possibly, a caravan park or holiday apartments,” said the estate agent.
Mr Reynolds added that there has been interest from various parties in the short time since the lot was put up for sale.
“There has been interest and we have had quite a few enquiries. Some of that interest has been local because obviously it is an iconic building in the area.”
Councillor Liam Blaney says the site has potential but that funding is an obstacle.
Liam Blaney is Fianna Fáil councillor for the Milford area. He brought a motion to the latest meeting of the municipal district asking that Milford be prioritised in a fresh application to the Rural Regional Development Fund. Included within that he specifically highlighted the old bakery site.
“The potential is there but funding is the obstacle,” Councillor Blaney told the meeting.
“Some people say demolish it and some say leave it as it is and work with what is there. It sits on Mulroy Bay, one of the most natural sheltered bays.”
