Milford aiming to maintain strong start

BY MATTHEW WILSON

MILFORD United forward Kyle Black is hoping they can continue their positive start to the season when they make the trip to Cappry Park this Sunday.

The Milford men have commenced their campaign brightly, winning all three of their league outings to date to remain on maximum points.

Black is pleased with the positive start that the club have enjoyed, expressing that it’s good to get points on the board early.

“We tried to get off to a good start, it always helps. Last year we were up and down and then with about eight games left we were going for promotion and with three games remaining we were looking down on the relegation play-offs. It’s good to get points on the board early”

“I think there definitely was emphasis on it (a strong start). This year especially when we were knocked out of the gaelic, not that you want to be but it helps. If the gaelic keeps going you’re missing four or five games and it’s hard to play with boys missing.

“At least this year we’ve got a positive start. We’re still missing a few now but it’s good to get it going.”

Speaking to the Donegal News before the season began, Milford United manager Noel Gillespie discussed the need for the side to convert more opportunities this term and they’ve certainly done that.

The Moyle View Park outfit have found the back of the net six times in their opening three fixtures and accompanied with two clean sheets, Black stated that it’s a great way to have commenced the campaign.

“It was a problem last year that we couldn’t score enough and we weren’t keeping clean sheets. Even this year we’ve kept two clean sheets out of the three games so you’re always going to have chances in the league if you keep clean sheets.”

“Last year we couldn’t score enough goals or keep clean sheets so it’s a positive start this season that we’re doing both.”

Black himself has had a big influence in Milford’s fine early form, finding the back of the net in the club’s narrow wins over Gweedore United and Ballybofey United.

The Milford United forward expressed that it’s a huge confidence boost to get off the mark so early in the campaign and he’ll be hoping that plenty of more opportunities present themselves going forward.

“Last year, I started with a goal in the first game and there weren’t too many after that so it’s great to get off to a good start.

“When you’re scoring too at the start of the season then you get a bit of confidence instead of going through a few games, getting chances and thinking, ‘I’m not going to score this’ instead of the other way around. Now you’re hoping to get these chances to score.”

Noel Gillespie’s side are back in league action this Sunday as they make the trip to Cappry Park to face Jamie Doherty’s Cappry Rovers team.

Like Milford, the Cappry men have also begun their season on a positive note, recording wins in all three of their Division One outings to date.

Sunday’s clash will see one of the two sides’ 100 percent record come to an end and Black is expecting a ‘big battle’ when the pair face-off.

“Definitely. They’re winning the same way as us. They had a narrow win over Rathmullan there and that’s as good a win if you’re winning tight games and keeping clean sheets. It’s definitely going to be a big battle up there.”
