Mickey Harte steps down as Derry manager

Derry have parted ways with manager Mickey Harte after his first season in charge.

A controversial appointment last September, the Tyrone native, who managed his home county for 18 seasons until 2020, joined neighbours Derry from Louth.

The back-to-back Ulster champions had high hopes for the year, but were well beaten by Jim McGuinness’ Donegal in the quarter-final of the provincial championship in Celtic Park.

The group stage of the All-Ireland didn’t get any better with defeats to Armagh and Galway before a win over Westmeath saw them advance to the preliminary quarter-finals.

They defeated Mayo on penalties but were then beaten by Kerry at Headquarters last Sunday as their season came to a disappointing end.

In a statement released by Derry GAA, Harte acknowledged the contribution made by the players, and management team including Gavin Devlin. “I have decided to step down as manager of the Derry Senior Football team,” Harte said.

“I would like to thank the players for the huge commitment they gave to the Derry jersey during the 2024 season.

“I would also like to thank Gavin and the entire backroom team for their hard work, dedication and expertise.

“Thanks too for the support of the County Board and all those generous sponsors of the GAA in Derry. Finally, I wish the players every success in the years ahead.”

John Keenan, Derry GAA chairperson, said: “We sincerely thank Mickey, Gavin and their entire backroom team for their hard work and dedication throughout the 2024 season. We wish them the very best in their future endeavours.”
