THE parish of Mevagh are hosting their annual clean up this weekend and would welcome the help of any volunteers willing to lend a hand.
The annual An Taisce National Spring Clean in the parish is a joint operation between Carrigart Tidy Towns in conjunction with Downings Tidy Towns, Glen and Mevagh Development and Donegal County Council.
Organiser Columba Boyce told the Donegal News this week that it is virtually impossible to walk or drive along local roads without being confronted with roadside litter and bags of household waste that have been either discarded from passing vehicles or dumped in roadside drains at night-time.
This year’s clean up takes place this Saturday, April 22 from 10 am until 2 pm.
“Pickers, gloves, vests, bags etc can be collected from Downings Tidy Towns depot or from the forecourt of Galanta Gifts from 10am on the morning of the clean up. If the date or time does not suit, you can still do a clean up at a suitable time. Pickers will still be available at the Downings Tidy Towns depot or by ringing Carrigart Tidy Towns at 91 55623.
“Volunteers are required for the following roads. The R245 from Devlinmore to Lacagh Bridge and the R248 road to Downings, from the junction at the County Council stockyard to the Island Roy crossroads and all the roads in the Downings area, and the L1192 to Glen village and all other interconnecting roads in the parish.
“Please do not handle broken glass, metal objects or any other dangerous objects. In the interest of safety, small children must be accompanied by adults and are asked to clean one side at a time to avoid crossing the road,” he added.
