NORTH West MEP Jim Higgins has welcomed the announcement that Google is to provide a mapping service with information on the bus route and “train network” in Donegal.
The last train in the county came to a halt almost 54 years ago, on the last day of 1959.
However, in a statement to the Donegal News, Minister Higgins expressed his delight over the free service, a collaboration between Google and the National Transport Authority (NTA), for public transport routes within Donegal and beyond.
Minister Higgins, who prides himself on being Ireland’s only MEP on the European Parliament Transport Committee, explained the NTA provided Google with information on the “bus route and train network” in Donegal as well as the data behind its own journey planner.
“This great new service allows users to state their departure or arrival time, choose from several trip options, find the departure times of the next bus or train in Donegal and the walking directions to the nearest stop,” the Mayo native said.
“I am delighted that people in Donegal will be able to use Google Maps on the web, and their smartphone or tablets plan their public transport journeys. We need to make public transport affordable, accessible and easy to use. This new free product goes a long way in that regard. It’s just the ticket,” he concluded.
Transit includes all public transport services in Ireland and can be accessed from google.ie/transit
