Sinn Féin MEP Chris MacManus has commended the team at Finn Valley Family Resource Centre in Stranorlar for their work in supporting the local community. The Midlands North West representative was speaking after a recent visit to the resource centre where he met with Sally Mooney and Claire O’Kane.
MEP MacManus said: “I was delighted to visit Finn Valley Family Resource Centre recently. I had a very positive engagement with the staff there and I want to commend them for their fantastic work in supporting the local community in Stranorlar and surrounding areas.”
“Finn Valley FRC provide a wide range of supports and services to local people such as counselling, parent and family support, addiction recovery programmes and a number of support groups to name but a few. The Centre is extremely busy and supports huge numbers of people in the local community.”
“This work is vital for addressing social exclusion, poverty, assisting marginalised groups and providing equal opportunities to all. It underlines the need for Finn Valley FRC and other community sector organisations to be protected and adequately resourced so that they can continue to provide these invaluable services.”
“In particular workers in these organisations must be treated fairly. Many haven’t received a pay rise since as far back as 2008. This has led to huge recruitment issues within the sector, due to the pay disparity with workers doing the same jobs in state agencies.”
“While it is welcome that an agreement has been reached between the Government and Unions in recent weeks, this should be seen as just the first step in improving community sector workers’ conditions of employment.”
“Sinn Féin will continue to highlight the need to support resource centres and their workers in Donegal and across the State.”
