‘MenoWell Donegal’ programme attracting big interest

A six-week online health education programme focusing on perimenopause and post-menopause for women aged 30 and over living in Donegal will begin on Wednesday, November 1st.
The ‘MenoWell Donegal’ programme, which will be delivered EduFIT and funded by Donegal Sports Partnership, was launched earlier this month. To date, almost 200 women have signed up for the initiative.
The programme will consist of two 40-minute live online women and menopause-specific multimodal exercise classes per week on Mondays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. and one 30-minute live online women and menopause-specific health education masterclass per week on Wednesdays at 8 p.m.
Speaking about ‘MenoWell Donegal’ Dr Diane Cooper, CEO of EduFIT, said she was delighted to be working with Donegal Sports Partnership on what will be the first programme of its kind to be delivered locally.
“We advertised the programme on October 3rd and in the first seven days, we had 162 women signed up to take part in. We expect this will increase significantly over the coming days. We are really looking forward to meeting and working with all of these wonderful women,” Dr Copper commented.
A clinical exercise physiologist and health researcher, Dr Cooper said she has devoted her life to educating and training people to improve their health and well-being in all stages of life.
“For 20 years I have been listening to and working with women of all ages through numerous weight loss, lifestyle, health and research programmes. During this time, women continuously expressed to me the need for age and ability-appropriate, time-efficient, accessible, women’s health and menopause-specific exercise, nutrition and health education programmes.
“These types of evidence-based but simple and practical specific programmes were not available to women before now. All women go through menopause. Women can experience very difficult symptoms that have a profound impact on their health and lives for many years. However, lifestyle medicine can have such a positive impact on these symptoms and their health and well-being. We designed ‘MenoWell’ to teach women the skills and knowledge they need to take control of their health in all stages of life, with a particular focus on health gains and wellness in perimenopause and beyond,” she added.
Coordinator with Donegal Sports Partnership, Myles Sweeney, said he is delighted to introduce the ‘MenoWell’ programme to women of all ages across Donegal.
“We have been keeping an eye on the developments of this programme in Ireland, and especially the initial research programme led by Dr Diane Cooper with our colleagues in Laois Sports Partnership,” Mr Sweeney commented.
“We are delighted that the programme will go live in the county in November. The initial response has been really positive which reflects the great demand for further knowledge and education on the effects of menopause on women’s health and well-being, and how exercise can be a positive contributor to supporting women to take control of their health,” he added.
The 40-minute live online exercise classes will be hosted via Zoom. They will be instructed in real-time and will include a suitable warm-up and cool-down. The multimodal exercise classes improve cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength and endurance, balance, and flexibility all within one class. All exercise classes are designed by clinical exercise physiologists specifically for women of all ages and all fitness abilities, including those living with clinical conditions.
The exercise videos included in the on-demand library can be performed at a time and at a place most suitable to the participants, making it as easy as possible for them to be as fit and as healthy as possible, anytime, anywhere.
The 30-minute health education masterclasses will be delivered by experts via Zoom. They will focus on different topics relating to women’s health and the menopause journey including muscle, bone, and cardiovascular health, healthy nutrition, sleep hygiene and self-care. These are recorded so participants can watch them back at any time throughout the six-week programme.
