Memorial bench replaced again after vandals strike

By Dionne Meehan

A MEMORIAL bench in Magheragallan (Machaire Gathlán) has been replaced for the second time after it was vandalised last December.

Describing the recent vandalism as “not acceptable”, Cllr Michael Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig reminded the public that despite these benches being erected in memory of loved ones who have passed, they also serve a purpose.

“These chairs are for the community so that people can walk along that shoreline and take a rest,” he said.

“People have walked the sand dunes and that coastline for many generations.

“They might not feel as confident or as fit to do it now, but the idea of having resting places along the shore side would give them confidence and reassurance that they can find a place and take that rest,” he said.

Replacing the memorial bench for the second time free of charge, Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig expressed his gratitude to Newbridge Memorials.

He also thanked Sabba, Gola Island’s Ferry, for sponsoring the bench and helping the family.

Meanwhile, Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig is looking to the future where he will be working to place more memorial benches along the coastline in Magheragallan (Machaire Gathlán).

With just over 10 benches set to be dispersed along the coastline in the coming weeks, Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig has urged the public to get in contact if they wish to get their loved one’s name engraved on one of the benches.
