Melaugh and Red Hugh’s chasing elusive title

Red Hugh’s haven’t had much luck in championship finals down through the years, but they are trying to put that right this week.

They won a Junior title in 1981 under Hughie Gillespie, but lost Senior finals in 1986 and 1991.

There was another Junior final defeat in 2003, while Naomh Ultan beat them after a replay in 2015, and Naomh Colmcille claimed the spoils last year.

Gerard Melaugh knows all about the losing dressing room on county final day, but he’s hoping to experience a different range of emotions after the full-time whistle this Saturday.

“This is my fourth final. My record isn’t great, so hopefully we can change that this week,” said the Red Hugh’s captain.

“We don’t lack heart or fight and we always seem to go close. We can put it up to most teams, and we fought back in a couple of those defeats as well.”
