Megan Nic Fhionnghaile tuning up for TG4 appearance

DONEGAL fiddler Megan Nic Fhionnghaile will be among the featured artists in this Sunday’s episode of the TG4 series Sruth.

As well as being about traditional music in the modern era, Sruth pays tribute to the past masters, known and unknown.

This week’s episode focuses on the talents of Gaoth Dobhair musician Megan Nic Fhionnghaile who is the current Ulster senior fiddle champion and hails from a long line of fiddlers and singers. Megan is one of eight young musicians chosen and in this Sunday’s episode she will play solo tunes, as well as getting the opportunity to play with the legendary Scottish accordionist Phil Cunningham.

Growing up she was surrounded with songs and music from her area having her great-grandad, Joe Jack being a well known fiddle player of the area and her Grandmother and her siblings being singers. Megan attends the University of Limerick and has just finished her second year studying Irish Music there. Last year she was the Ulster champion in senior fiddle and was a finalist in the All Ireland Fleadh. She is active performing at festivals and sessions around Ireland and has teaching experience in her local community.

Also featured is Ciarán Ó Maonaigh from Gaoth Dobhair who was one of Megan’s first mentors.

“The word Sruth beautifully describes the centuries-old movement of people, language and culture across the Straits of Moyle, the shortest distance between Ireland and Scotland,” said a spokesperson for the four part series.

This Sunday’s episode featuring Megan Nic Fhionnghaile airs on TG4 at 9.30pm.
