Meeting adjourned as gardaí summonsed

FOR the second time in 12 days gardaí have been called to a meeting of Donegal County Council.

Today’s meeting in the Aura Leisure Centre was supposed to discuss a report regarding the purchase by the local authority of five houses in Buncrana.

But it descended in to mayhem when Councillor Frank McBrearty appeared to take a phone belonging to Sinn Féin’s Gary Doherty before exiting the building.

Mr McBrearty had accused his council colleague of filming him. He launched several verbal attacks on Councillor Doherty and other Sinn Féin members during the course of the meeting, accusing them of being IRA members and “informers”.

Councillor Doherty and colleagues attempted to prevent Councillor McBrearty from leaving the car by standing in front of his vehicle. They then had to take evasive action as he drove off.

Cathaoirleach Liam Blaney told stunned elected members, officials, media and members of the public that he had no choice but to adjourn the rest of the meeting until Monday.
