THE Glasgow Mary was announced in Glasgow at this year’s St Patrick’s Festival in Merchant Square in front of a 2,5000 strong crowd.
Merchant Square was painted green for the day with Irish and Scottish bands alike celebrating Irish heritage an culture.
The judges, including Angela Medford, a former Glasgow representative (2nd from the left) whittled down the entrants to eventually find the winner in Sinead Stevenson.
Sinead was presented with her crown and sash by Minister of State Dinny McGinley and Breeda Ojo (A native of Dungloe living in Glasgow). Sinead will now go on to represent Glasgow at the 45th Mary From Dungloe Finals.
East Kilbride born Sinead Stevenson, 21 will represent Glasgow. Although born in Scotland, like many Glasgow Irish both Grandparents hail from Donegal – her Grandmother (McGarvey) from Gweedore and Grandfather (Gallagher) Meenamara, Dungloe.
“I am really excited and honoured to represent Glasgow this year as it has always been her dream to be A Glasgow Mary. I went along to the festival as a child and look forward to it every year, but more so this year.
Danny Boyle, Chairman St Patrick’s Day Festival Committee, said: “The St Patrick’s Committee is proud to announce the Glasgow Mary at the Glasgow St Patrick’s Festival.
“A large part of the Glasgow Irish community hold links to Donegal and know the Mary From Dungloe festival very well.
“We would like to wish Sinead all the very best at the finals and hope she takes the title.”
