THE bravery of a young Donegal man who saved a baby during a tragic drowning incident in Buncrana earlier this year has been acknowledged at the National Marine Gallantry and Meritorious Service Awards.
Davitt Walsh from Kerrykeel risked his life by saving baby, Rioghnach-Ann McGrotty from drowning after her two brothers, father, aunt and grandmother all lost their lives in the devastating pier tragedy in Buncrana on March 20.
The baby was the only survivor of the tragedy.
Mr Walsh (29) received the Michael Heffernan Gold Medal for Marine Gallantry for showing bravery at huge peril to his own safety to risk life, in an effort to save the life of a child.
He was presented with his award at the National Marine Gallantry and Meritorious Service Awards 2016 on Friday evening at Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park hosted by the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross, TD.
