McVeigh looking over his shoulder

SEAN McVeigh admits that he’s looking over his shoulder as a new wave of hungry Donegal hurlers emerge.

McVeigh has been a regular part of the Donegal set-up for almost ten years now, but he says the experienced players have never been under as much pressure to hold on to their places.

Donegal won the All-Ireland Under 21 ‘C’ title last season, and those young players will be looking to kick on in 2016 and establish themselves in the senior side.

“Every year there are more and more younger players coming into the squad, and this year we have had four or five younger lads coming in and they have really brought energy to the team,” said McVeigh.

“Boys are looking over their shoulder and everyone is under pressure. There is a big focus there now.

“Most of our younger players have been playing at ‘A’ grade at under 16s and minor in Ulster. They have been playing against the likes of Antrim and Down on a regular basis and have been running them close.

“They won an under 21 title last year and they want to be achieving things. If the standard isn’t up to it, they’re not very impressed.

“It’s up to the older players to make sure they are coming into a squad that is ambitious, focussed and really wanting to do well.”
