DONEGAL TD Joe McHugh has welcomed the decision to host the 2018 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open in Inishown
The Government Chief Whip paid tribute to the work of Ballyliffin Golf Club General Manager John Farren in bringing the tournament to Co Donegal from July 5 to July 8 next year.
Minister McHugh said he has been helping the bid for the Gashedy Links to host the biggest names in golf.
“This announcement today is a testament to the work of John and everyone at Ballyliffin Golf Club,” said the Donegal TD.
“I know that Government support is required and I have been working to secure that support.
“I also know that with my colleage Cllr Bernard McGuinness and Donegal County Council that infrastructure upgrades are required as well as financial support.
“Next year’s Irish Open will be a massive boost not just for Inishowen but also for the entire North West in Donegal and Derry as television cameras will be able to showcase the stunning beauty of the area to tens of millions of golf fans around the world.
“The world’s top golfers will be here in the county including Rory McIlroy, who is no stranger to Ballyliffin and who has been a huge supporter of the club for many years.
“In Government I will continue my work with John and his team to ensure it is an unforgettable event for the county.
“Star Wars helped put Inishowen firmly on the tourist map and the arrival of the Irish Open will have huge financial benefits for Donegal for years to come.”
