Ryan McHugh has warned his Kilcar teammates to expect a ferocious reaction from reigning champions Glenswilly when they visit Towney on Sunday.
Aidy Glackin’s side were beaten by Gaoth Dobhair last time out allowing Mervyn O’Donnell’s charges to drag themselves level on points with the Glen in what is now a tight and claustrophobic Group C of the Michael Murphy Sports & Leisure SFC.
With Gaoth Dobhair entertaining struggling Ardara, Glenswilly will be hoping that Adrian Brennan’s side can do them a favour against the odds. The possible permutations mean all four sides could yet progress in this section. Although with table-proppers Ardara’s scoring difference at -14, it would take a highly unlikely sequence of events for the Pearse Park side to squeeze through to the last eight.
We could also be presented with the scenario where Kilcar, Glenswilly and Gaoth Dobhair find themselves all deadlocked on four points apiece if the Glen and the Magheragallon sides both score victories at the weekend.
That would force matters to be resolved by scoring difference instead of the usual head to head solution.
McHugh – despite Kilcar’s attractive scoring difference of +12 at the top of the pile – isn’t taking anything for granted. Barry Doherty’s high fliers want to seal their progression as section winners and without the need or assistance of any calculators.
He told the Donegal News: “We’re not guaranteed to go through to the next round yet. If results don’t go our way… we want to make sure of that with the win next weekend. That’s the way we’ll be taking it. I think you need to approach every game like that.
“You can’t take anything for granted. Every championship game is tough in this section. We’ll be building for that exact same thing now against Glenswilly.”
