FORMER Donegal manager Jim Mc Guinness walked away victorious once more, this time claiming the top spot at the Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Awards for the Bord Gáis Energy Sports Book of the Year award for his book ‘Until Victory Always: A Memoir’.
His book tells the tale of his humble beginnings in Glenties and how he came to lead his county to All-Ireland victory for the first time in twenty years.
Anne Enright, Niall Breslin, Joe Duffy, Susan Jane White and Louise O’ Neill were some of the other winning authors named at the Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Awards held in Dublin last Wednesday.
Renowned Irish American novelist JP Donleavy was presented with the Bob Hughes Lifetime Achievement Award. Adding his congratulations to his friend “Mike” Donleavy by video-link, was Hollywood megastar Johnny Depp, who is producing and reportedly starring in, a film version of Donleavy’s 1955 novel, The Ginger Man.
Bestselling author Bill Bryson was the recipient of the Bord Gáis Energy International Recognition Award, a special award made to international authors who have contributed substantially to the health and wealth of the Irish book-trade.
Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the star-studded awards ceremony took place in Dublin’s Double Tree Hilton and was attended by Ireland’s top writers, publishers, booksellers and media personalities including novelists Kevin Barry, Paul Murray and Belinda McKeon, broadcasters and writers Ryan Tubridy, Sinead Crowley, Diarmuid Ferriter and Matt Cooper, food writers Donal Skehan, Diana Henry and Trish Deseine, writers Paul Howard, Martina Devlin, Carlo Gebler, Roisin Ingle, Derek Landy and many more.
