McGuinness will work together with new-look Executive

Jim McGuinness is hopeful that he can form a good relationship with the new county executive and work well together for the common good of Donegal football.

The year 2023 was a turbulent one for Donegal GAA both on the field and off it.

However, McGuinness’s return to the senior hotseat has given the county a lift.

There was further change at County Convention in December with former Tánaiste Mary Coughlan coming in as the new Chairperson.

Damian Diver – who was part of McGuinness’s management team in 2014 – is the new Coaching Officer, while Grace Boyle has returned for another stint as Treasurer.

Sinead Breen has taken on the reins of PRO, while Mary Kelly is now Assistant Secretary, and there is a fresh energy to Donegal GAA matters at present.

“Everybody wants the best for Donegal football,” said McGuinness on Wednesday night.

“People that are coming in now please God will all work together, and we will work together with the Board and hopefully vice versa. I think clubs working very closely with the Board as well is going to be very important.

“There’s a young team here and we have to look to develop them and try and get the group to grow but equally there is a lot that needs to be done off the pitch as well in terms of the development of underage football structures in the county and facilities and resources.

“The female game is exploding and all those things have to be taken care of so hopefully now there is a coming together and a feel-good factor.

“Obviously with Mary at the helm, she is a woman that has been there and done that in terms of management and she will not suffer any fools and if there are any tough decisions to be made she won’t shirk them either.

“I think that is great to have that and hopefully everyone will row in behind her and work for the common good which is Donegal football and hopefully over the months and weeks ahead that we all can start creating a wee bit of positivity within the county and hopefully that can transpire to good results on the pitch.”
