McGroary hoping Derry switch reignites career

BY AIDAN O’DONNELL

BRIAN McGroary is hoping to rediscover his ‘love for the game’ following his switch from Molineaux to the Brandywell this week.

The 19-year-old from Drimarone in south Donegal joined Derry City from English side Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this week, having seen his three-year spell with the midlanders blighted by an injury nightmare.

McGroary, who joined Wolves as a 16-year-old having impressed for the Donegal Schoolboys in the Milk Cup, saw his chances of progression into the first team hampered after he was diagnosed with an inflammatory arthritis condition, which affected his joints after matches and training.

He has since been able to get the problem under control and believes a move to the League of Ireland can have the desired effect in resurrecting his stalled career.

“I hadn’t played in about 14 months and had to make the decision what to do with my career,” said McGroary.

“The amount of training that was going on at Wolves and the intensity of competing and trying to get into the first team, I thought was too much. So I spoke to a lot of people and thought it was a better option to look back at playing League of Ireland football.

“I had fallen out of love with the game and it had become very frustrating. All I wanted was to get back playing regularly and to rediscover my love for the game.”
