McGlynn pleased with win over South West College

BY MATTHEW WILSON

ATU Donegal captain Luke McGlynn was pleased with his side’s victory over South West College on Tuesday night to make it two wins from two in the Trench Cup.

With the game level at half-time, the Donegal outfit came good in the second half and kicked on to secure a convincing 14-point win over their opponents which McGlynn was content with.

“I suppose we started slow in the first half, we were slow to get out of the blocks. We made simple, simple mistakes and we went back to the basics at half-time.

“We came out and kind of closed out the game, we got two quick-fire goals and held out the game. I thought we started to pick up on our basics and killed the game then.”

Maxi Curran’s men put seven goals past the Garda College last week in their opening group encounter to seal a routine victory but this was a different style of a win, with South West College testing them for the first 40 minutes.

McGlynn expressed that it took them a while to adjust with their opponents counter-attacking approach but they managed to do so after the restart to get over the line.

“It was tough here today, they’re a good side with a lot of good footballers. When you’re playing these teams, they’re going to look to hit you on the counter.

“I think it took us a while to get to grips with playing them with it on the counter but thankfully we got to grips with it in the second half and we kicked on from there.”

There’s an abundance of attacking talent within the ATU Donegal side. They concluded Tuesday’s contest with nine different scorers, with the Glenfin man kicking 1-5 for his team, which is something which will hold them in good stead going forward in the competition.

“There’s a lot of good footballers out there and anyone from number one to 32 can kick a point there for us. We’re just glad with the players that we have in the dressing room there at the minute.”

Next up for ATU Donegal is a meeting with SETU Carlow next Tuesday in their final group outing.

This is a repeat of November’s Division 2 League Final where Maxi Curran’s outfit secured a two-point win over the Carlow college to clinch the cup.

First place in the group is up for grabs next week and the Donegal side will be hoping to get the better of them again to seal top spot

“We played Carlow in the League Final. We had a big battle up in Ballymacnab so we’ll go into that one and we’ll just see how it goes.”
