McGinty and Collins set to contest key role

BY RYAN FERRY

The Donegal County Convention is due to be held on tonight but huge drama is not anticipated with just a couple of positions up for grabs.

The three main officers – Mary Coughlan (Chairperson), Mary Kelly (Secretary) and Grace Boyle (Treasurer) are all to be returned unopposed.

Frankie Doherty (St Eunan’s) has completed his five-year term as Assistant Treasurer and has been nominated for Vice Chairperson and Ulster Council Officer.

However, he has confirmed to the Donegal News that he won’t contest the Vice-Chair meaning David McLoone (Aodh Ruadh) will continue in that position.

Doherty’s name will stay in the hat for Ulster Council where incumbent Cieran Kelly has opted against running.

Andy Doherty (Red Hughs) is intent on seeking re-election, while Conor McDermott (St Mary’s, Convoy) will be leaving his name in the mix, and William Doogan (Aodh Ruadh) is also nominated.

Michelle McKenna has stepped down as Donegal LGFA Secretary and has been nominated for two positions on the Donegal GAA Officer Board.

However, it is the Assistant Treasurer post that she craves and she was busy canvassing for it over the weekend.

Kieran Gallagher (Termon) told the Donegal News that he won’t be allowing is name to go forward as he is too busy with club commitments, but Brendan Kelly (St Mary’s, Convoy) is expected to be in contention to succeed Doherty.

The Assistant Secretary is a key position as it deals with fixtures.

Darren Collins (Sean MacCumhaills) has been in situ for one year and intends to go again but Glenswilly’s Sharon McGinty has confirmed that she will contest the position.

Conor Ó Gallachóir (Cloughaneely) will take over as Irish and Cultural Officer while Damian Diver (Coaching Officer), Sinead Breen (Communications Officer), Cormac Hartnett (Hurling Officer) and Fergus McGee (Central Council Officer) are all to be re-elected unopposed.

There are five motions down for discussion with three of them relating to the tidying up of bye-laws.

Red Hughs and Glenfin have both proposed motions relating to club membership and the topic of boundaries which has long been a contentious one in Donegal could provide debate.

The Glenfin club will host the convention in Jackson’s Hotel and the action will begin at 7pm.
