SEAN McGinley has his sights sets on reaching the 3000m steeplechase final as he represents Ireland at the European U23 Championships in Espoo this weekend.
The Finn Valley man flew out to Finland with the majority of the Irish team on Tuesday, with those competing on the opening day today (Thursday) leaving a day earlier.
Finn Valley coach Neil Martin is the team manager for the 32-person squad while McGinley, the only Donegal athlete selected, will compete in the steeplechase semi-final in the Leppävaara Stadium on Saturday morning, with his goal for the competition to make the final.
Thirty-eight athletes qualified to compete in the steeplechase and it is expected to be three heats, with the top four going through, so it will be a big ask for the 20-year-old to make it through to the final against older opposition, especially due to injury problems this season.
But it’ll be a good test for McGinley that will stand him in good stead for years to come.
“Hopefully I’ll be close to qualifying,” McGinley said.
