IT’S just shy of a 350-mile return trip from Wicklow Town to Ballybofey, but John Gerard McGettigan had no qualms about making that journey for ten years as he gave incredible service to Finn Harps.
The Milford man had two stints with the Ballybofey club and made his debut as a 16-year-old.
In total, he played 343 games for Harps and scored 36 goals. That puts the former midfielder in eighth position in the all-time appearances list.
There were plenty of ups and downs during that time, but the 1995/96 season was a good one when Harps finally won promotion back to the Premier Division.
βI remember there was huge relief at the time. I was getting that bit older and had been playing for a long time,” said McGettigan.
βIt was great to finally bring Harps up to the Premier Division and get a crack at playing against the top players in the country.β
