I was very sad to hear of the death of Hughie. What an amazing man. I first met Hughie when I was a surly teenager at Loughanure Secondary School. He was my history teacher. Years later, he was my teacher at the Regional College in Letterkenny. He was brilliant, kind and had an abundance of empathy. His influence was so profound on my family. He gave all his efforts and talents to bring my brother and cousins to the Slogadh in 1973. I remember him translating “Country Roads” to gaeilge. We later connected when I visited Ireland a few times and he called me from Staten Island to see how I was doing. I will never forget him. He will always be in my heart.
