Speaking this week, Mr David Fitzsimons of REI, said he wanted to congratulate the 30 progressive retailers for being selected. “They are exemplars of the retail industry. Their success shows what can be achieved from the application of a strategic vision for retail in Ireland,” he said.

“All have been selected as finalists because they have shown a consistent commitment to excellence in meeting and exceeding customer expectations. The Irish shopping experience continues to match the best that Retail can offer around the world. We believe that these stores are well placed to capitalise on a positive Christmas Season,” he concluded.
The awards will take place in the Radisson Blu in Galway on November 7.

Last year, McElhinney’s won the prestigious Drapers ‘Independent Department Store of the Year UK and Ireland.’
The awards recognise the very best brands, designers, and businesses in fashion retail.

The well-known department store was founded by local man John McElhinney in 1971 and now employs more than 180 full and part-time staff and is a major draw to the Twin Towns.

The young entrepreneur purchased a van and went door to door, selling clothing and household goods, before opening his first shop in Glenfin Street, Ballybofey, in 1971.

Over the years, the department store has grown from strength to strength, continually updating and modernising and it now operates from a 90,000 sq ft building, and has more than 1,500 suppliers many of which are Irish.
