McDevitt delighted with decider display

Naomh Conaill forward Shane McDevitt was delighted with the character of his side to get over the line against Gaoth Dobhair and seal the Senior ‘B’ title.

In what was a thrilling encounter where there were several shifts in momentum, a Joseph Shankey major 15 minutes into extra-time made sure the cup was making its way back to Glenties.

McDevitt, who was named Man of the Match in Sunday’s showpiece, expressed the difficulty of the test that Gaoth Dobhair supplied in a contest that showcased the talent within the two clubs.

“It was a tough one”, said McDevitt. “Reserve football has really come on over the years and that was the toughest one yet, the football is just serious now.”

“Our boys are just something else. We’re down training with the senior boys nearly every night of the week so it just gives us that experience.”

“It was a great performance, all of the boys dug in deep there and in the last two games too. There was no killing us off, we just went at it.”

Gavin McBride put the Magheragallon men in front with a goal in the final five minutes of extra-time however, the Glenties outfit showed great character to respond immediately with a goal of their own through Joseph Shankey.

McDevitt was pleased with the battling traits that his side displayed, with the bench having a major impact following their introduction to the action.

“It was like the Ardara game but we didn’t let it get to us too much. We knew that we had legs going into the second half of extra time , we knew we had boys coming in off the bench that are fit, it’s a good young team. It’s not what reserve football used to be, it’s something else now.”

“It’s lovely to have the cup back. It’s a great start and hopefully the seniors can go on now and take one home too.”
