McConalogue welcomes commencement of ED review at hospital

THE commencement of the work by the Performance Management and Improvement Unit (PMIU) at Letterkenny University Hospital has been welcomed by Donegal Minister Charlie McConalogue.

The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine said he hopes the review will lead to better and more efficient systems being put in place at the hospital.

The six-week review of the hospital’s emergency department got underway on Friday. It comes after GPs and hospital consultants sent written correspondence to the Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly highlighting their concerns for patient safety.

Yesterday, GP representatives held talks with Saolta management. The meeting was also attended by Saolta CEO Tony Canavan.

In a statement issued yesterday, Minister McConalogue said the hospital review was most welcome. He added that Minister Donnelly will visit the hospital as the review progresses.

“The review will focus on all aspects of Letterkenny University Hospital, from the numbers presenting at the emergency department, to reducing waiting times, delayed discharges, community care, and GP services,” Minister McConalogue said.

“This review is a most welcome development and will hopefully lead to better and more efficient systems being put in place at the hospital.”

Minister McConalogue said he has worked to help deliver significant investment in the hospital.

“It’s important that this level of investment translates into the high level of services we want to see provided in our county,” he said.

“So the appointment of the specialist team by the Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, is extremely important in this regard.”

Pointing out that he will be continuing to liaise with Minister Donnelly in relation to the work of the PMIU, he added: “Minister Donnelly is monitoring the work of the specialist team closely that he has assigned to carry out a review.

“A visit to Letterkenny University Hospital by Minister Donnelly will be arranged when the team has progressed some of their work.”
