COUNCILLOR Michael McClafferty was elected Cathaoirleach of the Glenties Municipal District during the district’s AGM on Tuesday.
He was nominated by Fianna Fáil’s Cllr Anthony Molloy and seconded by Sinn Féin’s Cllr Brian Carr. Cllr Molloy was then elected Leas-Cathaoirleach.
This marks the second time the Independent councillor has served as Cathaoirleach. He takes over from outgoing Cathaoirleach John Sheamais Ó Fearraigh.
In his address, Cllr McClafferty thanked the outgoing chair for his dedicated work and acknowledged the strong support he had received from him as both a friend and colleague.
Delighted with his appointment, Cllr McClafferty noted the personal significance of the day, describing it as particularly poignant following the recent passing of his mother.
He described her as a major driving force throughout his political career, saying she always pushed him on.
Before nominations began, Independent Councillor Michéal Choilm Mac Giolla Easbuig voiced strong criticism of the election process, describing it as a “farce.”
Highlighting that he has served as a councillor for eleven years without ever being elected Cathaoirleach, he called the process “not an open or democratic one,” alleging that decisions had been made in advance of the AGM.
