The goalkeeper was confirmed as the new captain this week. The 21-year old Termon woman has been on the Donegal senior panel since 2008.

In her first season, she played on the Donegal senior team that was beaten by Clare in the Suzuki Ladies National League Division 2 final in Ennis.

A year later, however, she won the Minor Ladies All-Ireland title as Donegal defeated Clare in the final played at Tullamore.

In 2010, McCafferty was in goals as Donegal defeated Waterford to win the All-Ireland Intermediate title at Croke Park. McCafferty kept a clean sheet in the final as Donegal won 2-12 to 0-16.

She takes over from Aoife McDonnell who was captain for the last three years, skippering the Tir Chonaill women to that Intermediate title. The Glenties woman is currently in Australia, however and unavailable for the 2013 Ladies National Football League.

Donegal will compete in Division One again this year – but have just one home game. They open the campaign with the home tie against Laois on Sunday, February 3rd, before facing testing trips to Dublin, Mayo, Monaghan, Meath, Tyrone and Cork.
