STEPHEN McBrearty is facing up to a year out of action after his worst injury fears were realised on Wednesday.

The 17-year old Kilcar man suffered a tear of the cruciate ligament in his left knee during Kilcar’s All-County League game at home to St Eunan’s on Sunday.

Having been assessed in Letterkenny General Hospital earlier in the week, McBrearty underwent a scan at the Sports Surgery Clinic in Santry.

McBrearty has only just returned from a six-month lay off becuase of a cartilage injury in the same knee that he picked up during Kilcar’s run to the Donegal Minor Championship title in 2012.

A younger brother of Patrick McBrearty, he is rated as one of the bright talents in Donegal.

“It is a big blow for us, but it is a bigger blow for the player himself,” Kilcar manager John McNulty said.

“He worked so hard to get back from the other injury. The whole team feels for him and all we can do now is give him as much support as we can and pray that he gets back healthy.”

He sustained the injury in the final minute of the first half of Sunday’s game. Bursting in on the endline McBrearty awkwardly went to ground and was stretchered off.

“It looked serious enough, but we never imagined that it was the cruciate,” McNulty said.

“The worst thing is that it’s the knee that was in trouble before. Hopefully his recovery will go well for him.”

He is under the care of Dr Ray Moran in Dublin. McNulty said: “He is in good hands and will be getting the best of treatment.

“Hopefully he’ll get back soon. We’d love to get himself and Patrick together in our full forward line.”
