THE new Mayor of Donegal County Council John Campbell will meet with Donegal Youth Council tomorrow (Wednesday) at 2pm in the County House in Lifford where he will present the group with a recently granted European award.

The Youth Council are holding tomorrow’s meeting in the County Chamber in Lifford where they will receive the Assembly of European Regions “Most Youth Friendly European Region” Special Prize to recognise one of their projects from last year.

The group of young people, who are based from all over the county, have had their SPARKS Mental Health roadshow from last year selected as the 2014 winner of the Prize.

The Assembly of European Regions is made up of 230 regions from across 35 European countries and they present this award every two years to one project as a means of acknowledging best practice in youth participation and involving young people in democratic life. The Award jury met in Brussels last week where they selected the Donegal group’s project to be the overall winner.

As part of the prize a representative from the group recently travelled to Jönköping in Sweden in June to do a presentation about their project for the Annual AER Youth Regional Network.

Chairperson of the Donegal Youth Council Shane Hegarty says it will be great to finally receive the award. “We have known for a little while that we were selected for the award so it will finally be a day to properly celebrate the achievement and we also look forward to meeting with the new Mayor John Campbell who has already been a good supporter of us in our work over the last year in his role as Councillor”.

The Donegal Youth Council SPARKS Mental Health Roadshow saw them work with over 800 young people from all over the county. The roadshow, which kicked off in Letterkenny on World Mental Health Day, also visited Stranorlar, Gaoth Dobhair, Buncrana and Donegal Town during October and November.

Donegal Youth Council is funded by the Donegal County Council, HSE Health Promotion and the Department of Children & Youth Affairs and is co-ordinated by the Donegal Youth Service at local level.
