Mayor congratulates Tidy Towns participants

Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Cllr Gerry McMonagle has congratulated all the towns and villages in the county who participated in this year’s SuperValu Tidy Towns Competition.

41 towns and villages across Donegal entered this year’s competition.

“In 2017 Donegal County Council increased our commitment to Tidy Town committees and initiatives threefold to €75,000 when an additional €50,000 was allocated in this year’s budget” said Cllr McMonagle.

“This clearly illustrates our commitment to our communities and our desire to support the wonderful work done by volunteers across Donegal.  The Councils Litter management team also works day in day out with communities to tackle litter and illegal dumping and we have been particularly successful in this area over the last number of years.  We have thousands of community volunteers working with us to keep our towns and villages and indeed our rural areas clean and litter free and I think it is really important that the work of these unsung heros is acknowledged and recognised.”

Cllr McMonagle also congratulated Danny Martin from Raphoe Tidy Towns Committee who was awarded the Community Hero award in this year’s competition.

“I would like to congratulate all those Tidy Town Committees who received medals and awards including my own town of Letterkenny.  But I would also like to congratulate all those other Tidy Town Committees who entered this competition.  It is no easy task entering this competition.  It requires a lot of hard work and dedication from everyone in the community and in particular from those on the committees.  I would encourage all committees to continue to enter this prestigious competition and we in the Council are here to support and help in any way we can.”

This year Buncrana received a coveted Gold medal award while Malin and Glenties were Silver medal winners.

Letterkenny received the County Award while Malin and Buncrana were highly commended and commended respectively in this category.

Buncrana Tidy Towns Initiative also received the Local Authority Pollinator Award for their work in this area while Carrigart was a joint winner of the Gaeltacht award.
