The Donegal Senior Footballers were crowned Ulster Champions for the second successive season.
Jim McGuinness’s team saw off Armagh in a cracker by 2-23 to 0-28 in Clones with Niall O’Donnell scoring the winning point.
That win did take its toll though and Donegal were down a couple of key players as they lost to Tyrone in MacCumhaill Park in their All-Ireland Series Group opener.
There was disappointment for James Daly’s Donegal Ladies as they were well beaten by Armagh in the Ulster Final.
The Donegal Senior Hurlers were frustrated when they lost at home to London in the Christy Ring Cup.
They rounded off their season with an impressive victory over Meath in Trim.
There was heartbreak for the Donegal men’s Under 20 football team after they lost out in extra-time against Tyrone in the Ulster Final.
The Donegal Minor Footballers began the month with a victory over Armagh but then tasted provincial semi-final defeat at the hands of Cavan.
Donegal subsequently went into the All-Ireland Tier 2 Minor Championship and defeated Derry but their campaign came to an end when they were beaten by 6-11 to 0-12 by Meath in the Athletic Grounds.
The Donegal minor ladies came out second best against Monaghan in the Gold Final at Newtownstewart.
The Donegal Masters team came up short against a strong Tyrone side.
It was a very good month for the Termon senior footballers and they made a bright start to life back in Division 1 and were leading the way in the top flight, while they also won the senior crown at the Comortas Peile na Gaeltachta in Ardara.
St Naul’s won the Junior title while Dungloe surprised Termon to lift the Senior Ladies crown.
Gaeil Fhánada defeated Ardara on free-kicks to secure the Donegal Intermediate title, while Naomh Columba won the Junior ladies section.
Naomh Muire and Aodh Ruadh started strongly in Division 2 of the men’s all-county league, while Burt and Red Hughs set the early pace in Division 3.
The Loreto Convent Under 14 team clinched the Shield Final when they saw off Virginia College by 4-11 to 1-14.
In soccer, it proved to be a really disappointing May for Finn Harps.
They lost 2-0 to both Treaty United and Athlone Town.
The team did grab a scoreless draw away to Longford Town but then came unstuck at home against UCD, losing 2-1.
Harps ended the month with a 3-1 defeat against Bray Wanderers.
Finn Harps player Josh Cullen was called up to the Republic of Ireland Under 17 squad for the first time alongside teammate Gavin McAteer.
Letterkenny Rovers completed a domestic treble when they prevailed 2-1 against Castlefin Celtic in the Brian McCormick Cup Final. Nathan Plumb scored the winner in Ballyare.
Fanad United were beaten 2-1 by Leicester Celtic in the first round of the FAI Senior Cup.
Kyle Martin registered a hat-trick as Lagan Harps got the better of Gweedore Celtic 4-0 in a play-off at the Flagpole Field and were promoted to the Premier Division.
Kildrum Tigers Reserves regained the Voodoo Venue Cup when they eased past Erne Wanderers 4-0.
Amber Barrett started for the Republic of Ireland as they recorded a super 2-1 win over Turkey in the Nations League.
Ciara Grant helped Hibernian to the SPWL League title.
Bonagee United women’s team defeated Lagan Harps to win the nine-a-side league.
The Donegal Women’s League Under 12 team won the Inter-League Shield when they saw off Limerick Desmonds 2-0.
Odhran McHugh notched four goals as Deele College got the better of Gaelcholáiste Mhuire AG in the FAI Schools Minor Boys National Cup Final in Athlone.
Rosses Community School’s first year girls team tasted All-Ireland glory when they got the better of St Jarlath’s College, Tuam 2-1.
In athletics, Mark English set a new Irish 800 metres record at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting in Bydgoszcz in Poland. English won the race in time of 1:44.34.
Brendan Boyce performed well at the European Race Walking Team Championships in Podebady, Czechia. The Milford man, who was close to stepping away from international competition, produced a good time of 2:58.36 in the 35km race and finished 30th overall.
Letterkenny AC’s Teresa McDaid was Ireland Team Manager at the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China, and the women’s 4×400 metres team and men’s 4×400 metres relay teams qualified for the World Championships in September.
Oisin Ó Gailin made his debut in an Irish vest at the European 10000 metres Cup in France.
Letterkenny AC’s Stephen McAuley was the winner of the Strabane Lifford Half Marathon.
McAuley’s clubmate Ciaran McGonagle came third at the prestigious Anglo Celtic Plate 100k in England.
Kilmacrennan man Peter O’Donnell broke the course record as he set a fine time of 2:15:09 to win WAAR.
O’Donnell finished 12 seconds ahead of local man Declan Ferry while Shaun Stewart was third. Ruth Candon from Roscommon won the female race.
In cycling, Donegal’s Jamie Meehan and Odhran Doogan both finished inside the top three in general classification at the 2025 Ras Tailteann.
Gortahork youngster Doogan finished third overall, while Mountcharles native Meehan was ahead of him in second after all five stages had concluded.
Doogan won the points classification category and also claimed the win in the overall Irish County Rider category, while Meehan was the overall Under 23 winner.
Dungloe boxer Matthew McCole defeated Austria’s Rahman Altamirov on his international debut in Enniskillen.
There was mixed fortunes for Donegal boxers at the Boys and Girls Senior Cadet Championships at the National Stadium.
Alesha Mullis Boyle from Dungloe added to her growing reputation with a super 5-0 victory over Ella Leonard (Monieva) in the 66kg category.
Unfortunately there were defeats for Taylor Parke (Raphoe) and Shaun Doohan (Dunfananghy) in their finals.
In motorsport, Garry Jennings and his Letterkenny co-driver Dale McGettigan won the Campbell contracts May Day Rally at St Angelo.
However a few weeks later, Jennings was involved in a serious crash in the Cavan Stages Rally, which ruled him out of the Donegal International Rally.
Jennings credited Donegal’s Declan Boyle and Paddy McCrudden with saving his life when they came to his rescue.
