Max Johnston suffers ‘significant’ ankle injury in Athlone win

Finn Harps forward Max Johnston suffered a significant ankle injury which will keep him out for an extended period of time, the club have confirmed.

The 19-year-old was brought on as a substitute in the 82nd minute of Finn Harps’ 1-0 away win over Athlone Town last Friday and put in a vital block to stop Kailin Barlow’s shot from outside the box from going on target in the 96th minute.

But the attacker suffered a bad injury in sliding in and he was stretchered off the pitch after an awkward landing.

A statement from the club read: “The club can confirm that Max Johnston suffered a significant ankle injury after a crucial block in the final stages of Friday’s win in Athlone.

“Max was taken to Tullamore Hospital where he received treatment before undergoing surgery on Saturday. He was discharged from hospital on Sunday afternoon and has returned home to rest and recover.

“Everyone at Finn Park is fully behind Max as he begins his road to recovery and we have no doubt he will be back as strong as ever.”

Johnston has made five sub appearances off the bench this season in his third year featuring for the first team, scoring once since he made his debut in 2023.
