DONEGAL tourism has received a major boost with over €17 million to be made available for ‘greenways’, the Donegal News has learned.

The Mayor of Donegal, Cllr Terence Slowey, has described the awarding of almost €15 million in EU funding for cross-border walking and cycling routes as a ‘major coup.’

Matching funding from both Derry and Donegal local authorities brings the total to €17.7 m.

Cllr Slowey was reacting to a brief announcement on Monday by the CEO of Donegal County Council, Mr Seamus Neely.

He told a shocked council meeting that €14.7 was being approved jointly to Donegal and Derry City and Strabane District Council.

“This will give us a great opportunity to invest in walkways and greenways,” Mr Neely said.

Speaking to the Donegal News yesterday (Thursday), Cllr Slowey confirmed the council had received a formal offer in relation to the funding.

“This is a major coup by the council and Francis Conaghan, our Paths and Trails Development Officer. This is going to make a massive difference to Donegal, especially the east of the county and in Inishowen in particular,” Cllr Slowey said.
