Mass of thanksgiving to take place for Bishop

A MASS of thanksgiving for Bishop Alan McGuckian SJ is to take place in St Eunan’s Cathedral in Letterkenny.

Bishop McGuckian SJ will leave his post as the Bishop of Raphoe after almost seven years.

Earlier this month it was confirmed that Bishop McGuckian was appointed by Pope Francis as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Down and Connor.

Bishop McGuckian was publicly announced as Bishop of Down and Connor during Mass at Saint Peter’s Cathedral, Belfast, by chief celebrant

Bishop Donal McKeown, Bishop of Derry and Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Down and Connor.

He will succeed Archbishop Noel Treanor, who was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union in 2022.

Bishop McGuckian was appointed as Bishop of Raphoe on June 9, 2017 on the Feast of St Colmcille.

He was ordained two months later.

The Mass of thanksgiving will take place on Monday, February 26 at 7pm in St Eunan’s Cathedral in Letterkenny to mark Bishop McGuckian’s departure from the diocese as he prepares to take up his duties at Bishop of Down and Connor.
