A LETTERKENNY woman has been re-elected to the Governing body of Aontú for the fifth year in a row.
Mary T Sweeney, who will stand for the party in the Letterkenny LEA in the upcoming local elections in June, was selected once again to serve on the party’s Ard Comhairle, its officer board.
She won the vote at the party’s recent Ard Fheis which saw over four hundred delegates from throughout the country in attendance.
The party is particularly strong in Donegal where it is fielding five candidates for the upcoming Local Elections on June 7.
Speaking on her re-election Ms Sweeney said it is an honour to serve with principled people of calibre and integrity.
“Our party is arguably the only coherent and well organised opposition in the country.
“We stand up for what we believe in and are a constant and unwavering support for the people of this country who are living through real difficulties, at a time when we are told the country is awash with money.
“Here in Donegal we have people terrified of going to bed in case their homes, built with defective concrete blocks, collapse.
“We have little children in pain and agony with Spondylosis, we have people living on the streets, rent has gone through the roof in Donegal, we have a government that is more and more obviously unable to manage the large numbers of immigrants coming into Donegal which is a gross dereliction of duty to everybody, we have carers without respite, we have roads that are in a terrible state and accident black spots that need urgent upgrading.
“The list is endless and so many people feel abandoned by the big political parties.
“Since the referendum on family and care, hundreds of people have joined Aontú.
“Our memberships now stands at some 2,000 people and this is due to the hard work we do, the principles we stand for and our desire for a fair and just society for all,” she concluded.
