Mark English set a new Irish record over the rarely-run distance of 500 metres on his way to victory at the Globen Galen in Stockholm this evening.

English overcame an unfavourable lane to win the race ahead of American Erik Sowinski in a time of 1:00.93 at Ericsson Globe this evening.

The Letterkenny man was bidding to run the race in under 60 seconds, and while he failed in that attempt, he did set the fifth-best European Indoor time for 500 metres.
