Ramelton Mariners’ dramatic title win in the Donegal League at the weekend prompted big celebrations among the players and supporters – and the success has even gained national attention.
Club stalwart Mark Wilson was interviewed by Today FM presenter Dave Moore this morning and Dave couldn’t hide his admiration for the Donegal club saying their title win was “an unbelievable achievement”.
Mark had told the programme how his club had folded for five years before they reformed three years ago.
“It’s 14 years since we last won the league,” he said.
“In fact it’s 14 years since we won anything.”
Mark said Ramelton Mariners got back into the Donegal League after himself and some friends discussed the idea when they were over at a Man United game.
“We chatted about bringing the Mariners back for the boys around the town,” he said.
“Jason McCahill was the person who organised it and myself, David Fisher, Edward Boyce and Nicky Hanlon, we all got the club back up and running again.”
Mark told an obviously impressed Dave Moore that he fills the role of club secretary.
“The club is run well. We have a good chairman in Paul Doherty, the manager is Raymond Friel. We have done fantastic this year, winning a league title and gaining promotion.”
And when Mark said the team finished second from bottom in the league last season, Dave Moore suggested that the club should go after the manager’s job at his beloved Man United.
In a brilliant interview, Mark captured the feeling of drama and excitement as Ramelton struck a late equaliser against Ballybofey United to pick up the point they needed to win the league.
“It’s just brilliant for the community,” he said.
“We scored in the 90th minute with Shay Callan McFadden getting the goal. The whole squad was brilliant the entire season.”
