Marchers told to make hospitals an election issue

A local man gets his message across at Saturday’s protest in the Twin Towns.

THE possible closure of Lifford, St Joseph’s and Ramelton community hospitals is a major election issue.

That was the defiant message at a packed public meeting in Jackson’s hotel, Ballybofey, on Saturday after up to 1,000 people marched through the Twin Towns.

The protest was organised by the recently formed Save Our Services (SOS), made up of representatives of the three hospitals. Chairman, Fr John Joe Duffy, described the committee as a united front, to show the government that all communities are standing “should to shoulder”.

“We are here today as one united body – Minister, reverse your decision, Taoiseach listen to our people and, politicians, listen to your voters as we are not for turning,” said Fr Duffy to a rapturous applause.

Another public meeting is to be held in Ramelton tomorrow (Monday) night.
