Manorcunningham men come together to set up new Men’s Shed

By Dionne Meehan

A GROUP of friends from Manorcunningham have turned their thoughts into a reality by opening the first Men’s Shed in the village.

When Declan Glackin, John Crawford, Paul Doherty and Joe Mulhern found there wasn’t much to do in the village other than to go for a pint, they began working on ways to get men socialising.

Working alongside Brian Carr, Men’s Shed Representative for the DLDC, the group managed to secure a building.

The building, previously used by the Irish Wheelchair Association as a Day Centre, is situated across from the Lagan Inn Bar and Lounge, Main Street, Manorcunningham.

With a donation of paint from Crown Decorating Centre in Letterkenny to get the ball rolling, the committee began working hard to get the initial set up done and dusted.

Hoping for a soft opening in August, Declan said they are now crying out for volunteers to help.

“It really is only painting, cleaning and tidying up. There is no heavy labour involved.

“This started out as two or three of us chatting about having no-where to go and it has taken wheels very quickly.

“Coming into the winter is when people don’t connect with each other, now that football is over etc.

“It is just a place where people can come for the craic, a chat or just a cup of tea.

“It is going to be a social area for any men in the area, or outside the area,” he said.

With some gym equipment already donated, the committee are still actively accepting donations, whether that may be in the form of furniture, kitchen items, dart boards etc. all will be considered.

If you are interested in lending a helping hand you can contact Declan on 086 8280265 or find them on Facebook @ Manor Man Shed.
