Manor family fearing homelessness

by Dionne Meehan

A MOTHER and her three-year-old daughter have been left staring homelessness in the face after receiving a letter of eviction from their current landlord.

Michaella and Myla McBride from Manorcunningham will be made homeless on Sunday, September 1, with mum Michaella saying her cries for help have fallen on deaf ears.

Michaella, who has been on the housing list for four years, made contact with Donegal County Council in June immediately after receiving the eviction notice.

“I was told that because we have a roof over our heads until September 1 there was nothing they could do for us until we present ourselves as homeless,” she told the Donegal News.

“We are going to be left homeless on Sunday, we have nowhere to go.”

Despite being in contact with a few local councillors, the McBride family don’t know what the future holds.

“Every mother wants a safe space for their child,” Michaella concluded.

However, Michaella isn’t the only single mother in Donegal feeling the pinch when it comes to the current housing crisis.

Another single mother, who wished to remain anonymous, also fears homelessness after she was notified that her rent is set to increase from December.

The mother, who is renting private in Letterkenny at the minute and has been on the housing list for seven years, will have to pay €1,100 per month starting from the first week of December.

“I am feeling sick to my stomach,” she told the Donegal News.

“I could be homeless for Christmas.

“I am worried sick.

“I would expect these prices in a big city like Dublin not Donegal.

“I’m not sure how they expect us to live.

“I have to feed, clothe and place a roof over me and my son’s head with more or less fresh air. It’s ridiculous.

“My mental health has taken a turn because of the worry and stress I’ve been going through trying to find a suitable place for us both.

“Donegal is by far the most forgotten country when it comes to housing, mental health care and jobs,” the worried mother said.
