A MAN with several health conditions has shared his frustration over ongoing mould issues in his one-bedroom home at St Eunan’s Terrace, Raphoe.
Mark Smith, a council tenant, is particularly concerned due to his health problems which include COPD.
At 58 years old, Mark has lived in the house for over seven years, but the mould has only become a serious issue in the past two years, with visible spores growing in his bedroom and bathroom.
He met with officials from Donegal County Council this week, but was not given a timeline for when remedial works will be carried out.
He claims he was told repairs could take up to two years due to existing maintenance backlogs.
Despite providing the local authority with his doctor’s notes confirming that his health is being exacerbated by his environment, Mark claims he was advised to clean and paint over the mould himself.
However, he is unable to do so due to ongoing back problems for which he is awaiting surgery.
“They told me to paint the house, but it’s been painted twice already, and the mould just keeps coming back in on top of me,” he said.
Mark last cleaned and painted the walls a couple of months ago, but the mould has reappeared and he believes it will continue to do so until the underlying problem is addressed.
“It just keeps getting worse, and I don’t know what more I can do,” he said.
The Donegal News contacted Donegal County Council for a response. It had not been received at the time of going to print.
