Man who died in Buncrana Pier tragedy to be buried tomorrow

THE funeral of Patrick (Paddy) McMenamin, Ard Crana and formerly of 35 Castle Avenue, Buncrana, will take place tomorrow in St Mary’s Church, Cockhill.

Mr McMenamin died after his car entered the water at Buncrana Pier on Sunday, May 19.

His passing has been met with deep sadness locally.

Speaking to the Donegal News, Cllr Jack Murray said there is an “awful sense of numbness” follow Mr McMenamin’s death but the community of Buncrana will rally around his family at this sad time.

Mr McMenamin’s remains will be reposing at his son Sean and Averil Mc Menamin’s home at Clonbeg, where everyone is welcome to pay their respects.

Funeral from there tomorrow, Wednesday, May 22 at 10.30am going to St Mary’s Church, Cockhill for Requiem Mass at 11am with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Meanwhile, Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to Sunday’s incident to contact them.

That morning at approximately 7.30am, gardaí and emergency services were alerted to a vehicle in the water at Buncrana Pier.

Following a multi-agency search and recovery operation, the car was recovered from the water.

Mr McMenamin was discovered deceased inside the vehicle.

A technical examination of the scene at Buncrana Pier and Swilly Road was completed by Forensic Science Investigators (FSI).

Anyone who was travelling in the vicinity of Buncrana Pier, Swilly Road and Shore Front between 6.30am and 7.30am on Sunday morning is asked to contact Buncrana Garda Station on 074 9320540, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
