Man to be sentenced for assaulting wife

A MAN is to be sentenced at Letterkenny Circuit Court next week after admitting cutting his wife’s neck.

Carl Hargaden (61), of 68 Flax Fields, Convoy, tendered a guilty plea when he appeared before Letterkenny District Court on Monday.

Sergeant Maurice Doyle told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has consented to Hargaden being sent forward on a signed plea.

Hargaden is charged with cutting his wife’s neck, cheek and wrist at the couple’s home on January 28, 2024.

He is also charged with damaging a pair of reading glasses and the theft of a phone on the same date and at the same location.

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham administered the alibi warning and noted the signed plea of guilt before the court.

Solicitor for the accused, Patsy Gallagher sought one counsel. Mr Gallagher also applied for legal aid in the case.

Hargaden, who is currently in custody in Castlerea Prison, appeared in the dock of Letterkenny District Court on Monday.

He is charged with assaulting Anna Hargaden causing her harm, contrary to Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Act Against the Person Act 1997.

Hargaden will appear before the next sitting of Letterkenny Circuit Court, commencing on Tuesday, for sentencing.
